Vietnam approves VND3 trillion for climate change resilience projects
The Vietnamese government will spend VND3 trillion (US$141 million) for climate change adaptation in 2015, focusing on coastal and protection forest rehabilitation, aiming to mitigate the adverse effects of rising sea water and consequences of natural disasters.
That was among important information announced by Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai during the fifth meeting of the National Committee for Climate Change with sponsors of climate change programmes and development partners in Vietnam in Hanoi on October 8.
The meeting aimed to evaluate and set up the post-2015 implementation orientation for the Support Programme to Respond to Climate Change (SP-RCC), which, he said, was an extremely important funding source for Vietnam’s climate change resilience projects.
Vietnam has been implementing great efforts over the past few years to work out measures to respond to climate change and minimise its negative impacts. Many mechanisms and policies have been promulgated to serve the long-term climate change adaptation, Deputy PM Hai said.
The deputy PM asked the Committee’s members to consider climate change adaptation a key task, while calling on donors and development partners to continue their strong support of Vietnam in its realisation of the SP-RCC’s goals.
Launched in Vietnam in 2009, the SP-RCC is supported by the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA), the French Development Agency (AFD), the Australian Government, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the World Bank, and the Republic of Korea’s Eximbank.
Over 200 action plans have been built so far under the SP-RCC, receiving total sponsorship of about US$1 billion.
