Mobile service provider VinaPhone announced on January 14 that it successfully installed a base transceiver station (BTS) on the top of Fansipan in Lao Cai province at 3,045 metres.

The BTS comprises one 2G and one 3G transceiver stations, with a radius of 3-4km from the top of the mountain and 42Mbps speed of 3G access.

According to a representative from Vinaphone, the BTS operation is significant politically and socially, affirming the brand name of Vinaphone and the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT).

The station will help ensure communication for political security, forest fire prevention, agro-forestry product control, and search and rescue in the Hoang Lien National Forest.

It also responds to young tourists’ desire to share images and messages when conquering the country’s highest mountain.

The station is part of a strategic co-operation between the VNPT and the Lao Cai provincial People’s Committee in telecommunications in the 2014-2020 period. After 53 days of construction and installation under rain and snow, the BTX officially began operating on January 10.
