The awards ceremony was held in Hai Duong province on May 9 by the Ministry of Information and Communications in collaboration with the Vietnam Post, Ministry of Education and Training, and the Thieu Nien Tien Phong (Vanguard Teenagers) Newspaper.

In his letter, Hai Nam – a student of Le Huu Lap Secondary School in Hau Loc district – incarnated as the ‘little match girl’ character in the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name, wrote to the Danish author to show his noble desire for a society in which people care for each other and which has no tragic endings like what happens to the story’s main character.

According to the organising board, the first-prize winning letter is full of humanity and international integration. It has already been translated into French to be sent to the Switzerlands-based UPU for the international-level round.

Alongside the first prize, the organising board awarded three second, five third and 30 consolation prizes. Ten sub-prizes were also presented to the youngest contestant as well as to ethnic minority and disabled contestants.

The 44th UPU international writing contest, the 25th edition of its kind held in Vietnam, was launched and implemented on a national scale from October 2014 to March 2015 under the theme ‘Tell us about the world you want to grow up in’.

After sixth months since it was launched, the organising board received nearly 970,000 entries from students across the country. As many as 68 letters were selected for the final round and 39 of them were awarded with prizes.
