Vietnam wins gold medals at International Mathematical Olympiad

The Vietnamese team has won two gold, three silver and one bronze medal at the 56th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from July 4-16.

Vietnam came fifth in the overall rankings, behind the US, China, the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Gold medals went to 11th grader Vu Xuan Trung from Thai Binh’s gifted high school and 12th grader Nguyen The Hoan from the gifted high school under the University of Natural Science under the Hanoi-based National University.

Silver medalists were 12th graders Hoang Anh Tai from Phan Boi Chau gifted high school in Nghe An, Nguyen Tuan Hai Dang from the gifted high school under the University of Natural Science under the Hanoi-based National University, and Nguyen Huy Hoang from the gifted high school under the Ho Chi Minh City-based National University.

12th grader Nguyen Thi Viet Ha from Ha Tinh province’s gifted high school bagged the bronze medal at the Olympiad.

This is the best ranking the Vietnamese Mathematics Olympiad team has ever reached.

The 2015 IMO attracted 577 contestants from 104 countries and territories around the world. The host Thailand placed 12th in the competition’s rankings.
