Draft programme on general education announced
The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) announced a draft programme on general education to collect feedback from the public in Hanoi on August 5.
The general education lasts 12 years with two phases – fundamental education and secondary vocational education. |
The programme, which is in line with resolutions of the Party and the National Assembly on comprehensively renewing the country’s education and training, has been developed, discussed and adjusted many times in the past three years with direct participation of scientists, education researchers, professors and teachers from different education institutions inside and outside the country.
Accordingly, general education will still last 12 years with two phases – fundamental education (primary education for five years and basic secondary education for four years) and secondary vocational education (high school education for three years).
The programme aims to help students develop their own abilities, and form their character and habits with harmonious physical and mental development.
At the primary education level, pupils will be mainly educated on family and homeland values, necessary habits in studying and daily life and essential knowledge and skills to continue the higher education level.
The basic secondary education programme will help students adjust themselves to common standards of society, form the capacity for self-study and enrich their basic knowledge to continue to study at the high school education level, join vocational training or begin their working life.
At the highest level of general education, students will understand and be able to choose a career appropriate to their abilities and interests.
The programme is designed with eight subjects: language and literature; maths; ethical and citizen education; physical education; arts; social science; natural science; and information technology.
The subjects will be balanced and synchronised throughout the whole system. Each academic year comprises 35 studying weeks.
The MOET said that the implementation will be reviewed annually and adjusted if needed.
