As reported, from 238 entries the organisers selected 50 collectives and 20 individuals who have contributed highly to the cause of environmental protection, recognised by the MoNRE.

Attending the event and presenting the certificates of merit to the prominent models, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai praised efforts made by organisations and individuals over the last five years in contributing to the cause of environmental protection, and preserving the nation for all.

The award winners have also actively participated in the process of finalising institutional and macroeconomic policies on environmental protection, in addition to voluntarily working together to raise public awareness and change behaviours to strengthen efforts for environmental protection.

Thanks to those efforts, environmental protection has seen significant improvements at all levels with the amendment to the Law on Environment Protection introduced in 2014. More than 40% of villages and communes across the country have developed independent teams to collect garbage; 89% of industrial parks have installed and operated waste water collection and treatment systems; units causing serious environmental pollution under Decision No. 64/2003/QĐ-TTg were reduced by over 90%.

The deputy PM also pointed to challenges facing the sector, including wartime toxic chemicals, pesticide residue and industrial pollution that threaten the sustainable protection of the environment and mankind.

He also called for more communication campaigns to engage the community in working towards a green and clean environment and for the sustainable development of the nation.

Earlier the same day, the MoNRE opened the 4th National Environment Conference at the National Convention Centre in Hanoi with a sequence of events, including an international exhibition of environmental protection and seminars on State-management and science and technology in the field of environmental protection.
