Viettel launches mobile services in Tanzania
The military-run telecom company Viettel launched a mobile network under the brand Halotel in Tanzania on October 15.
This is the fourth market in Africa to see the presence of the Vietnamese company after Mozambique, Cameroon and Burundi, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion strategy.
With a population of more than 50 million, Tanzania is currently the largest among the overseas markets that Viettel is offering its services.
Halotel has a wide telecommunications coverage throughout the East African country, boasting more than 2,500 2G and 3G base transceiver stations and 18,000 kilometres of optic cables.
This project was named the best investment project in the eastern, central and western Africa region in 2014.
Viettel CEO Nguyen Manh Hung said IT and telecommunications projects like Halotel would help developing countries transform their socio-economic situations by offering equal opportunities for all.
Viettel is currently making foreign investments in ten countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas, with a customer base of 75 million.
The corporation’s revenues in 2014 reached nearly US$10 billion, of which US$1.2 billion came from its overseas investment arm.
