Over 500 newly-recognised professors and associate professors honoured
The State Council for Professor Title held a ceremony in Hanoi on November 12 to announce and grant certificates recognising 52 professors and 470 associate professors in 2015.

Among those granted the titles, Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu, 43, in Physics, Deputy Head of International Training Institute for Materials Science under the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, is the youngest professor.
Dr. Hien’s colleague, Dr. Nguyen Duc Loi, 69, in Mechanical Engineering, is the oldest professor. The youngest associate professor is Ho Khac Hieu, 31, in Physics, from Duy Tan University.
This year also witnesses the second female professor of Mathematics recognised after 35 years. Dr. Le Thi Thanh Nhan, 45, Vice-Rector of the Thai Nguyen University of Science. The first female mathematics professor is Prof. Hoang Xuan Sinh, who was granted the professor title in 1980 at 47.
Dr. Nhan is also the youngest new female professor in 2015. Together with her, there are four additional female professors recognised this year – Do Huong Tra (Education), Nguyen Thai Yen Huong (History), Hua Thi Ngoc Ha (Medicine) and Phan Thi Nga (Medicine).
In addition, there are five associate professors from ethnic minorities groups – one Ha Nhi and four Tay ethnic people, including four women and one man.
According to the State Council for Professor Title, the newly-recognised professors and associate professors are increasingly younger, at an average age of 47.64 in 2015 (49 in 2014). The proportion of lecturers among them is higher than in 2014 and previous years, accounting for 82%.
Congratulating educators and scientists awarded the titles at the event, Politburo member and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Communications and Education Dr. Dinh The Huynh praised the contributions of intellectuals, including professors and associate professors, for the country's Doi Moi process.
He also affirmed that seeking, training and using intellectuals is one of the top priorities in building and developing the country's human resources.
Dr. Huynh expressed his pleasure at the increasingly young age of the new professors and associate professors, with improved professional qualifications and foreign language skills, and the increased number of their scientific works published in prestigious journals around the world and applied effectively in the country's socio-economic life.
The Politburo member also stressed the great responsibility of professors and associate professors to the Party, State and people, as well as to the younger generation of the country, urging each to strive with enthusiasm, courage, wisdom and determination to overcome difficulties to put the country forward in the innovation of education, training, science and technology, for a prosperous, democratic, fair and civilised Vietnam.
The State Council for Professor Title, established in 1980, is the only organisation mandated to assist the Prime Minister in directing, performing, recognising, or cancelling accreditation standards titles of professor and associate professor. More than 11,600 professors and associate professors have been conferred and recognised over the last 35 years.
