Rencontres du Vietnam: Scientists talk star formation in different environments

More than 150 scientists from 27 countries and territories are gathering at a workshop in the central city of Quy Nhon to talk about the formation of stars, as part of the ‘Rencontres du Vietnam’ programme.

Professor Tran Thanh Van, chairman of Rencontres du Vietnam, said the event drew over 120 scientific reports presenting the latest findings from researchers around the world about how stars formed in different environments.

This is the first conference on star formation in Vietnam and it aims to bring together theorists and observers working on star formation, while fostering close collaboration through small groups.

The conference, which runs from July 25-30, covers all aspects of star formation, including low-mass star formation, massive star formation, filamentary structure, giant molecular clouds, and galaxy-scale star formation.

Prior to the workshop, a boot camp was held at Quy Nhon University to provide fundamental knowledge on star formation for young astronomers from Vietnam and Laos.

‘Rencontres du Vietnam’ is a programme designed to help Vietnamese scientists and those of the Pacific-Asia region to establish contact with colleagues from the West, including many Nobel laureates.

The programme also aims to bring science to the greater public and grant scholarships to help young Vietnamese students study in Vietnam and foreign universities.
