A workshop on coping with climate change for fruit trees

ABO - The Vietnamese Farmers Association and the Tien Giang provincial People's Committee jointly organized the workshop under the theme “Many economic and technical solutions to sustainable develop fruit trees and rice to adapt to climate change in the Mekong Delta”.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Vice Chairman of the of Vietnam Farmers Association Nguyen Xuan Dinh said that the Mekong Delta has an area of over 4 million hectares, including over 2.4 million hectares of agricultural land and nearly 811 thousand hectares of aquaculture land, with a population of 17.8 million.

The Mekong Delta is considered the largest granary of Vietnam, providing more than 50% of rice production (of which, contributing 90% of export rice), more than 70% of aquatic products and more than 36% of fruit for country, etc…

At the workshop, experts and scientists proposed solutions to cope with climate change for fruit trees in the Mekong Delta, such as: Consolidating dikes to prevent salt water from entering the garden; storing fresh water in ditches for irrigation or store fresh water in thick plastic bags placed under trees; moisturizing plants with straw, water hyacinth, etc...

In addition, experts and scientists presented the direction to improve the quality of dragon fruits grown in Tien Giang province by approaching an integrated system of sustainable farming chains; organic fertilizer, soil improvement bio-organic, organic farming and preserving agricultural products, ect ...

The workshop is part of the operation series of the  agricultural fair of the Southwest region in 2019.
