Vietnam is planning to shut down 2G in the near future.

According to the Authority of Telecommunications, among 64.5 million 3G and 4G data subscribers, 58.8 million used prepaid plans and 5.7 million subscribed to post-paid services as of January 2020.

The number of subscribers using only 2G-based call and messaging services was 60.8 million, of which 56.7 million used pre-paid plans.

The latest data showed 2G subscribers have been outnumbered by 3G and 4G subscribers by 3.8 million.

In January 2019, there were 55.8 million 3G and 4G subscribers, considerably further behind the 75.2 million 2G users, which quickly dropped to 63.5 million compared with 62.5 million users of 3G and 4G services by the end of 2019.

Such figures show that users of 3G and 4G in Vietnam will continue to rise in the future, which will be the basis for the Ministry of Information and Communications to formulate a roadmap for turning off 2G.

The more widespread use of more recent wireless technologies will enable the implementation of the e-government initiative.
