Vietnam has opportunities to develop semiconductor industry

ABO/NDO- Vietnam has many opportunities to develop the semiconductor industry in the future, according to an official from the Ministry of Science of Technology (MOST).

However, the greatest challenge is the workforce, as Vietnam currently has only about 5,000 engineers working in this field, said Nguyen Phu Hung, Director of the MOST Department of Science and Technology for Economic Technical Branches, at a press briefing on October 9.

Hung said manufacturing chips require advanced technologies, therefore, MOST has determined that technology transfer is highly important, and it is collaborating with other agencies to train the workforce for this industry.

Vietnam is well-positioned to develop the chip industry.
Vietnam is well-positioned to develop the chip industry.

Among the three stages of design, manufacturing, and packaging, Vietnam will focus on chip design, which will require a highly skilled workforce, the official added.

In the future, Vietnam will need to introduce policies to encourage domestic and foreign companies to open their own laboratories or invest in those already existing in universities and research institutes, said Hung.

Furthermore, it is necessary to formulate the policies for investing in chip testing equipment in line with the set standards to help reduce the manufacturing time.
