There are some outstanding events that made the headlines in the last week.

Key transport projects put into operation in Hanoi

Nhat Tan Bridge, Noi Bai International Airport’s T2 Terminal and VIP A Lounge, and Vo Nguyen Giap Route have been inaugurated, further enhancing the transport infrastructure of the capital city.

Nhat Tan Bridge and Vo Nguyen Giap Route are designed to cut travel time between Noi Bai International Airport and central Hanoi, reduce traffic on the Bac Thang Long – Noi Bai Route and boost economic development in the north of Hanoi.

President Sang calls for promoting entire nation’s strength

In his New Year 2015 message, President Truong Tan Sang called on Vietnamese people to seize opportunities and promote the strength of the entire nation to safeguard national interests and move the country forward.

He stressed that only the consensus of the entire people and the national great solidarity bloc can create the power to help the country weather all challenges.

Cultural and arts programmes welcome New Year 2015

An array of cultural and arts activities took place across the country to bid farewell to 2014 and welcome in 2015. In Hanoi, a countdown party was held at Thien Quang Lake while residents in Ho Chi Minh City were treated to a stunning pyrotechnic show at Bitexco Tower, the tallest building in the city.

Vietnam and Japan co-operate in urban development

Vietnam and Japan have signed an agreement on urban building and development co-operation, under which Japan will share its expertise in technological building, quality management of construction projects, urban and human resources development as well as sending experts to support Vietnam in building mechanisms and policies in the field.

Nguyen Thi Anh Vien crowned top Vietnamese athlete of 2014

Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien has been named Vietnam’s outstanding athlete of the year for her exceptional performance at both domestic and international competitions in 2014. She set the historic milestone as the first Vietnamese swimmer to be listed in the world’s top 10 in the women’s 400m medley event by the International Swimming Federation. Vien also performed brilliantly to bring home the women’s 200m medley gold medal at the second Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

Vietnam’s airports serve 50 million passengers in 2014

Airports throughout the country served more than 50.5 million passengers and handled 905,000 tonnes of goods in 2014, year-on-year increases of 14.7% and 18%. Good signs were seen in the domestic market with estimated total passengers of 17.5 million, up 20.5% against last year.  The rate of delayed and cancelled flights declined sharply, accounting for 19.3% of total flights for the year.
