President stresses importance of maintaining political stability in border, island areas
President Truong Tan Sang asked border guards to actively help local people in border and island areas to develop the local political system and economy in order to strengthen their confidence in the Party and State and maintain political stability.
The President made the request at a conference held by the High Command of Border Guards in Hanoi on January 31 to review the results of the 15-year programme sending border guards to work at border communes.
Since the launch of the programme in 1999, the High Command of Border Guards have selected and sent hundreds of thousands of border guards to communes in 32 provinces and cities throughout the country.
They have directly worked with local authorities and proposed solutions to develop the grassroots political system and human resources, as well as Party building work in local areas.
They have also participated in reducing poverty and universalising primary education in border areas in addition to providing medical examinations and treatment to the locals.
In particular, they have engaged in building more than 6,900 social houses and 270 other facilities for the poor worth nearly VND300 billion in the 2008-2011 period, helping improve the living standards of ethnic minority groups in border areas.
President Sang said that the task of protecting national sovereignty and ensuring security in border and island areas requires the participation of all people and the political system.
Therefore, border guards should grasp thoroughly the political tasks of consolidating the local political system and enhancing local socio-economic development.
He also asked border guards in border and island areas to set examples for the locals to follow, contributing to protecting national territory and sovereignty over border and island areas.
