Law on Election of the National Assembly and People's Council discussed

National Assembly deputies continued to sit on the morning of June 3, hearing a report on the draft Law on Amendment and Supplement to Articles of the Maritime Law, and discussing the Law on Election of the National Assembly and People’s Council.

At the session, Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang presented a report on the draft Law on Amendment and Supplement to Articles of the Maritime Law, which consists of 366 articles - 108 articles more than the current law.

The current Maritime Law has revealed many limitations and shortcomings that must be addressed, Minister Thang said, adding that the draft Law on Amendment and Supplement to Articles of the Maritime Law is expected to create more favourable conditions to encourage the development and integration of Vietnam’s seaport system. as well as meet the needs of passenger and cargo traffic.

The Amendment and Supplement are also in line with the revised Constitution and are consistent with international treaties of which Vietnam is a member, he added.

Regarding the Law on Election of the National Assembly and People’s Council, many deputies proposed the law have specific regulations on the structure and number of deputies who are women and members of ethnic minority groups.

However, the structure and composition of deputies of the National Assembly and People’s Councils must be based on specific criteria, and promote the people’s right to select and nominate candidates for the NA and People’s Councils, as well as ensure favourable conditions for all citizens to fully implement their candidacy and election rights under the law.

At the session, the deputies also discussed the standards of the candidates; the operation of the National Election Council and electoral agencies; and the right to vote and stand for election to the National Assembly and People's Councils.
