Deputy PM calls for more resources to develop transport networks in rural areas
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh has called on all available resources to develop transport networks and infrastructure in rural areas.
The government official made the request at a teleconference held in 62 cities and provinces nationwide on July 6 to review the implementation of the construction and management of transport systems in rural area in the 2010-2015 period, and design orientations for the work in the next five years.
He noted with praise that over the past five years, the programme on building new rural areas and improving transport facilities in rural areas has spread nationwide with the participation of the entire political system.
Stressing that in addition to mobilising human resources, the key to the success of the programme is capital from the State and localities. He asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Ministry of Finance to attract more resources, including official development assistance and foreign capital, in order the reach the programme’s targets.
According to the Ministry of Transport, over the past 5 years, the project has drawn in around VND 186,190 billion (US$8.5 billion) mobilised from the State budget, non-State funding, and citizens.
The money has been used to construct and upgrade around 150,000 kilometres of road, build more than 15,470 bridges and repair over 11,500 others, as well as improve transport infrastructure in rural areas.
Drainage systems have been improved and many waterway projects have been put into operation under the programme, contributing to ensuring traffic safety and facilitating the transportation of local residents in the project’s benefiting areas.
