Addressing the event, President Truong Tan Sang praised the significant achievements, healthy development and glorious tradition of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army over the past seven decades.

He stressed that constructing and defending the country are two strategic tasks of the whole nation, which require the heavy responsibility and position of the Party, State, and people, particularly the people’s armed forces and the GSVPA in particular.

In order to fulfill its task as a strategic advisor for the Party, State, the Central Military Commission, and Ministry of Defence, President Sang asked officers, soldiers and commanders of the GSVPA in particular to thoroughly grasp the military theories of Marxism – Leninism and President Ho Chi Minh, the guidelines of the Party while learning from predecessors’ lessons in the country’s struggles for national liberation and protection in the past; as well as acquire a sound knowledge of the world’s advanced military science and technology.

He emphasised the need to continue building the Vietnam People’s Army into a revolutionary, elite, strong and modern army capable of improving its combat capacity and consolidating the country’s defence strength.

In addition, the agency was requested to update itself with the current world situation and make reliable forecasts on possible strategic situations or complications caused by hostile forces so as to accurately inform the Party and State in uncovering pilots to violate national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and the socialist regime.

Enhancing Party building and developing human resources were also among priority tasks assigned by the State leader to the general staff.
