The National Assembly approved the list of 21 members of the National Election Council (NEC) – one chairman, four vice chairpersons and 16 members – at its ongoing 10th session on November 25.

Accordingly, the NEC will be chaired by Nguyen Sinh Hung, who is also the NA Chairman, while the four vice chairpersons are NA Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan.
On the same day, Nguyen Hanh Phuc, member of the NA Standing Committee (NASC) and Chairman of the NA’s Office, was voted General Secretary of the 13th NA with approval from 395 of 465 NA deputies in attendance.
As stipulated in the revised Law on NA Organisation, the NA General Secretary is elected and dismissed by the NA, and acts as a spokesperson of the NA and the NASC. They are responsible for organising secretary procedures at sessions of the NA and the NASC, collecting opinions of NA deputies and signing the minutes of the meetings.
The NA also passed a resolution on the date for election of deputies to the 14th NA and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2016-2021 tenure – Sunday May 22, 2016 – as well as on the establishment of the NEC, and a resolution on election of the NA general secretary. The NA has assigned the NASC to announce the election day 115 days earlier as regulated by the law.
On behalf of the NEC, Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung vowed to do his utmost to ensure that the election be conducted in compliance with the Constitution and law. He also wished that NA deputies and voters would supervise and support the NEC to successfully organise the election on May 22, 2016.
At the November 25 sitting, lawmakers also voted to approve the draft revised Civil Procedure Code with 88.66% of votes in approval, and pass a resolution on enforcement of the Code with approval from 89.07% of votes.
