Numerous activities mark 70th anniversary of first election
A wide variety of activities were held on January 4 in many provinces and cities around the country to mark the 70th anniversary of Vietnam’s first General Election Day (January 6).

A meeting was held in the northern mountainous province of Lang Son to celebrate the anniversary with the presence of former General Secretary and former National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nong Duc Manh.
The delegates, who were former NA deputies as well as former leaders and officials of the province, reviewed the first general election of Vietnamese NA.
They also emphasised that the NA has constantly developed and affirmed its role as the highest representative organ of the people and the highest state power body of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
At the meeting, five local individuals were awarded the Campaign Medal for the cause of serving Vietnamese NA.
On the same day, the Ninh Binh provincial Party’s Committee and NA delegation held a meeting with current and former local NA deputies. Former NA Chairman Nguyen Van An and Politburo member and Minister of Public Security Tran Dai Quang attended the event.
Over the past years, the Ninh Binh province’s NA deputies have made important contributions to the formulation of policies, given useful suggestions on the NA’s draft laws as well as actively met with voters, acting as a bridge connecting people and the NA.
Additionally, Politburo member and NA Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan attended a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of Vietnam’s first General Election Day in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre. The NA Vice Chairwoman presented the Campaign Medal for the cause of serving the NA to several outstanding individuals.
On the occasion, the north central province of Thanh Hoa and the Mekong Delta province of Long An also held exchanges with current and former local NA deputies, under the presence of NA Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu and Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court Truong Hoa Binh, respectively.
On the same day, an exhibition, featuring more than 1,000 books, films, photos and documents on the 70 year development of the Vietnamese NA, kicked off at the National Library in Hanoi.
The exhibits reflect the historical milestones, the operation and great achievements that the NA and people have made over the past 70 years. The exhibition will last until January 12.
The celebrations for the first election anniversary were also organised in numerous other provinices, including Quang Nam, Bac Lieu, Dong Nai, Dak Lak, Kon Tum, Ca Mau, Binh Thuan and Hau Giang.
