Ceremony marks 62nd anniversary of Dien Bien Phu victory
A ceremony commemorating the 62nd anniversary of Vietnam’s victory at Dien Bien Phu, which ended French colonial rule in the country, was held in Dien Bien Phu in the northwestern province of Dien Bien on May 7.

The ceremony saw the presence of State President Tran Dai Quang.
In his speech at the ceremony, Deputy Secretary of Dien Bien provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Mua A Son emphasised that the victory was a decisive eventthat had become part of the nation’s proud history due to the sound leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh and the aggregated strength of national unity and the people’s and army’s determination to fight for national independence and freedom.
The campaign, which lasted 56 days and nights, was launched after a decision by the Politburo, President Ho Chi Minh and the Party’s Military Commission, he noted, adding that it was also a victory for armies and peoples of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
The triumph of the resistance war against the French demonstrated the nation's undaunted spirit, the Party's sound leadership, the nation's great unity and international support, he said.
On this occasion, Dien Bien province honourably received the Independence Order, first class for its achievements and contributions to the country.
Before the ceremony, President Tran Dai Quang and the delegation of Vietnamese leaders offered incense to war heroes resting at the A1 Hill Cemetery in the northern mountainous province of Dien Bien.
