The summarising report by the National Election Council delivered by NA Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong indicated that the elections were a great success, ensuring democracy, equality, lawfulness and safety. It was a true festival of the whole community, she said.

The elections were important for the entire Party, people and the armed forces, attracting the participation of the majority of the masses from the preparation phase until the Election Day on May 22. The elections also fostered the spirit of democracy, openness and transparency in every step of implementation.

More than 67 million voters cast their ballots - 99% of registered voters - to elect 496 deputies to the 14th NA, 3,908 deputies to provincial People’s Councils, 25,181 to district-level People’s Councils and 292,306 deputies to communal People's Councils.

Eighty-six deputies are from ethnic minority groups, 133 are women, 21 are non-Party members, and 71 are under 40. Meanwhile, 160 NA deputies were re-elected, accounting for 32.3% of deputies, 317 joined the NA for the first time, 310 hold a postgraduate degree, and 180 are university graduates. There are two self-nominated deputies.

Speaking at the conference, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong affirmed that the success of the elections once again showed political awareness and the sense of responsibility and patriotism of the entire people, demonstrating the confidence of the people in the leadership of the Party and the management and administration of the State and the government, as well as confirming national unity.

He urged the NA and the People’s Council at all levels to improve their operations, while asking deputies to uphold their responsibilities.

The Party chief stressed the need for the organisation of the first session of the 14th NA. The first session is a very important sitting focusing on the key tasks of considering and deciding on the senior personnel for State apparatus during 2016-2021 term; commenting on the implementation of socio-economic development plan and State budget during the first six months of 2016; and solutions to the socio-economic development plan and State budget for the remaining months of the year, along with other important matters.
