Activities nationwide celebrate National Reunification Day
A wide variety of practical activities were held around the country to celebrate the 42nd anniversary of the the Liberation of the South and National Unification (April 30, 1975-2017).

Ho Chi Minh City’s Youth Union held a ceremony to inaugurate the upgrading project and put the city’s house for children into operation at 36 Le Quy Don Street, District 3. The event saw the presence of Politburo member and Secretary of Party Central Committee (PCC) Vo Van Thuong who is also Head of the PCC’s Commission for Communication and Education, and former Politburo member and Ho Chi Minh City’s Party Committee Le Thanh Hai.
The upgrading project commenced in June 2015 with a total investment of around VND200 billion (nearly US$8.8 million). The house, located in an area of over 5,000 square metres with five floors and a basement, includes a 450-seat hall, 15 function rooms, 25 rooms for gifted children and a 3D movie theatre.
On the same day, a delegation of Ho Chi Minh City’s Party Committee, People’s Council and People’s Committee, led by Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong, laid wreaths and offered incense to pay tribute to heroric martyrs at the City’s Martyrs Cemetery in District 9 and Common Cemetery in Thu Duc District. Earlier on the same day, 17 women in the City were presented with the ‘Heroric Vietnamese Mothers’ title in honour of their contributions and sacrifices to the country.
Yesterday morning, Ho Chi Minh City organised the 41st cross-country run tournament to celebrate the 42nd Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day. The event attracted 1,500 athletes of all ages from 24 districts. The organising board presented prizes to outstanding athletes and units in nine categories (10 prizes for each).
On the occasion, Quang Tri Newspaper, in collaboration with other newspapers and organisations including Nhan Dan (The People’s) Television and Nhan Dan Newspaper, held a range of practical and meaningful political, social and sporting events.
Representatives of the delegations released flower garlands and coloured lanterns on the Thach Han river in Quang Tri province to pay tribue to heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the fierce 81-day battle to protect the citadel and Quang Tri township in 1972.
To celebrate the 42nd anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification and 25th anniversary of restablishement of Vinh Long province, the set of books entitled ‘Vinh Long Diary’ and the book ‘Vinh Long – the land and people’. The set ‘Vinh Long Diary’, comprising of 1,500 pages, is a scientific project on the province’s geography, economy, history, politics, security, defence and culture, contributing to helping the leaders promote local potentials as well as overcome limitations and difficulties to set out development strategies.
An exhibition, themed ‘Great Victory in the spring of 1975 and contributions of Thanh Hoa provincial Party committee, army and people during the resistance war against the US’, is taking place in Thanh Hoa from April 29 to May 3. On display are nearly 2,000 photos, documents, articles and artefacts reflecting the achievements and contributions made by the local people to the cause of national reunification.
