Party chief praises female lawmakers' role in empowering women

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has commended women parliamentarians for their constant efforts in increasing women participation in all aspects of life.

He told a gathering of female National Assembly (NA) deputies on June 8 that the country’s important achievements have been in part attributed to their significant contributions.

At the meeting, NA Deputy Chair Tong Thi Phong briefed the Party chief on the involvement of the group of female NA deputies since its establishment nine years ago in performing the parliament’s legislative, supervisory and decision-making functions.

She said 132 out of 491 members of Vietnam’s current NA are women, of which 32 are ethnic minorities. The youngest female deputy is Trieu Thi Huyen born in 1992 from the northern province of Yen Bai.

At the event, a number of deputies expressed their desire that the Party and State would create better conditions for female deputies to enhance their capacity and play a greater role in the country’s political, economic and social life.

Expressing his delight to meet female NA deputies, the Party General Secretary Trong emphasised that it is the Vietnamese Party and State’s consistent policy to enable the advancement of women and promote gender equality.

He added that over the years the capacity of female deputies has been increased, with many assuming key roles in Party and State agencies.

Trong expected that female NA deputies would continue to broaden their knowledge of laws and foreign affairs as well as exchange their experience in order to make the parliament function more efficiently.
