Standing Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh congratulated and praised the significant outcomes achieved by the Vietnam Farmers’ Association (VFA) and Vietnamese farmers over the past five years, whilst addressing a conference reviewing the emulation movement “Good farmers in production and business” for the 2012-2017 period, held in Hanoi, on September 19.

Among the attendants were Truong Thi Mai, Politburo member and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Mass Mobilisation Commission; Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, Vice President; and Tran Thanh Man, President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee.
In his speech, Politburo member Binh affirmed that the VFA has been demonstrating its important role as a central player in the farmer movements, as well as for the new-style rural area building movement.
Hailing the significant contributions made by the farmers to the cause of national construction, protection and development, he stated that the Party and State have issued many guidelines, mechanisms and policies aiming to develop the agricultural sector and rural areas and to promote the key role and creativeness of the peasant class.
The 300 farmers honoured and rewarded at the conference symbolise the industrious, dynamic and creative working spirit, as well as the ambition and desire to earn money legitimately for themselves, their families and society, whilst representing a class of farmers in the era of agricultural and rural area industrialisation and modernisation, and international integration, the deputy PM said.
In order to enhance the effectiveness and diffusion of the emulation movement, he asked the VFA to continue focusing their resources on the building of production models, considering the competent and prestigious farmers as the core force to help reorganise their production in the direction towards shifting from small-scale into large-scale production, and from favouring output into favouring quality of products, aiming to meet the integration requirements and improve farmers’ living conditions.
The VFA’s all-level affiliates need to pay adequate attention to communicating and encouraging the emulation movement, detect and replicate good production models and honour worthy people and noble deeds in a timely fashion, provide timely rewards to exemplary individuals in the emulation movement, and support each other in production development and sustainable poverty reduction, Binh stated.
Chairman of the VFA Central Committee, Lai Xuan Mon, noted that the emulation movement “Good farmers in production and business”, launched by the VFA in 1989, has attracted a response from millions of farmer households across the country, becoming a crucial motivation to boost socio-economic development in rural areas.
In the 2012-2017 period, the VFA has taken measures to direct and encourage members and farmers to implement grand guidelines in agriculture, whilst facilitating links between farmers themselves and between farmers and businesses in building cooperatives and farmer groups producing and consuming products according to the value chain.
In 2016, the total number of good production and business households across all levels reached over 3.55 million, accounting for 57.2% of the households registering for the title, creating on-the-spot jobs for over 11 million labourers.
At the conference, 20 farmers who performed outstandingly in the fifth national production and business emulation movement (2012-2017), were presented with the Labour Order, third class, while 69 other exemplary individuals received certificates of merit from the Prime Minister.
