Can Tho marks 20th anniversary as centrally-governed city
ABO/NDO- The southern city of Can Tho held a ceremony on December 31 to celebrate 20 years of its status as a centrally-governed city and receive the first-class Labour Order.
President Vo Van Thuong and many current and former Party and State leaders attended the event.
In his address, Can Tho Party Secretary Nguyen Van Hieu highlighted the city’s development over the past 20 years, emphasising that it has gradually affirmed its central role in the Mekong Delta region.
He stated that Can Tho aims to become an ecological, civilised and modern city highly characteristic of the Mekong Delta region and among the moderately developed cities in Asia by 2045.

Speaking at the event, President Vo Van Thuong stressed that the city’s achievements over the past 20 years have affirmed the Party and State’s right policy on its development.
He added that this is an important foundation for Can Tho to record rapid and sustainable development in the coming years, deserving to be the centre and driving force of the region.
The State leader also pointed out the drawbacks of Can Tho and asked the city to make greater efforts to enhance its economic competitiveness, transport infrastructure and human resources quality.
He called on the city to push for further administrative reform and focus on building an administration with capable cadres.
At the ceremony, President Vo Van Thuong presented the first-class Labour Order to the Party organisation, government and people of Can Tho.
