Decrease in traffic accidents in first nine months reported

The country saw a decrease in traffic accidents in the first nine months of the year but more serious accidents took place, reported the National Traffic Safety Committee at at an online conference about traffic order in the government’s headquarter yesterday.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, in the first nine months of this year traffic policemen handles nearly 3.34 million traffic violations, seizing nearly VND2,000 billion (US$94,384,143); more than 441,000 various vehicles and 275 driver's licenses.

The transport sector and policemen tighten weighing vehicles’ loading capacity and check drivers’ health condition; accordingly the sector has discovered 381 drug addicted drivers.

From December 16, 2013 to September 15, 2014, the country had seen 18,700 traffic accidents, killing 6,750 people and injuring 18,000 others, said Mr. Khuat Viet Hung, deputy head of the National Committee of Traffic Safety. The number decreased  by 3,164 accidents compared to same period last year.

Most of traffic accidents occured owing to drivers’ low awareness of regulations, said the  National Committee of Traffic Safety.

Deputy PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc who presided over the conference said that it needed to consider traffic accident prevention is a regular mission not movement.

The 2014 target is to reduce the number of mortality below 9,000 people. Mr. Phuc ordered more strict penalties imposed on violators and upgrade traffic infrastructure.
