Women's participation in politics promoted in Vietnam

Vietnam has been greatly concerned about the promotion of equality and the participation of women in politics, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of the country.

The affirmation was made by the Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly (NA) Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan at the Central–Central Highlands region’s workshop on strengthening women’s participation in politics, held in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum on December 29.

Addressing the workshop, the NA Vice Chairwoman emphasised that women’s full participation in political activities is a key factor to promoting gender equality in all fields.

Over the recent years, the increase of the number of women in political fields, particularly in Parliament, has become a criterion to evaluate the implementation of gender equality in all countries around the world, said the NA Vice Chairwoman.

Vietnam strives to bring the rate of women in party committees at all levels to at least 25%, and in the NA and People’s Councils, at all levels, to 35–40% by 2020, according to the goal set by the Politburo in Resolution No 11-NQ-BCT on women’s affairs in the period of industrialisation and modernisation. The State and Governments agencies aim to have women occupy at least 30% of key leadership positions.

The workshop offers an opportunity for delegates to discuss and make positive contributions to the promotion of the rights and participation of women in Vietnam, particularly in the Central and Central Highlands region, in politics.

The participants clarified the advantages and disadvantages and discussed measures to raise the rate of women participating the Party committees, people-elected bodies and State agencies at all levels in the coming terms.

They also proposed reasonable and appropriate solutions for the Party and State to create favourable conditions for women to get involved in political affairs.
