The nation has a major blood shortage

A critical shortage of blood, especially the A and O blood types may force the cancellation of elective surgeries and adversely affect the nation’s health care, according to the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT).

NIHBT Director Nguyen Anh Tri said this is one of the worst shortages that he has seen and medical centres across the nation are in urgent need. To deal with the issue, the NIHBT has called on citizens across the nation to give blood and get active in blood donation drives.

The institute has also coordinated with the Tien Phong (Vanguard) Newspaper to host Red Sunday campaigns in several provinces and cities to build up blood reserves for the upcoming Lunar New Year festival.
