Conducted by the Viet Nam Academy of Science and Technology, the project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using more locally manufactured LED (light-emitting diode) lighting products.

It will devise a national road map for the development of LED lighting that is subject to a biennial review, establish universal quality standards for LED lighting products, while raising public awareness about its benefits through workshops and training courses.

Indoors and outdoors displays of LED lighting are also planned.

The four-year national project will cost more than US$8.1 million, including more than $1.5 million in non-refundable aid from GEF and $6.4 million in kind from Viet Nam.

LED is a special type of semiconductor diode that can generate a narrow spectrum. LED lamps can create different colours, depending on the semiconductor materials and operating conditions.
