The contest, themed ‘Write a letter to your 45 year-old self’, is open to Vietnamese children and students between 10 and 15 years old.
The handwritten entries must not have already been published in any newspaper or book and should be under 1,000 words.
Contest submissions should be sent to the Thieu Nien Tien Phong (Vanguard Teenagers) Newspaper at 5 Hoa Ma street in Hanoi via post from October 9 to February 10, 2016 (according to the postmark).
Thirty-nine prizes will be presented to the most outstanding entries; the students will be acknowledged as winners of the national literature contest and will receive extra marks on the examination.
In addition to the highest awards, the organising board will present the ‘Promising writer’ title to contestants whose writings enter the final round.
The first prize winning entry will be translated into English and French to be submitted to the international level event.
On the occasion, the organising board presented awards and certificates of merit to eighth grader Truong Hai Nam from Nguyen Huu Lap secondary school in Hau Loc district, the central province of Thanh Hoa, who won the first prize of the 44th UPU Letter Writing Contest in Vietnam and the consolation prize at the international round.
Under the theme ‘Tell us about the world you want to grow up in’, Hai Nam wrote as the ‘little match girl’ character in the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name to the Danish author to show his desire for a society in which people care for each other and which has no tragic endings, like what happens to the story’s main character.
The annual event was held by the Ministry of Information and Communications in collaboration with the Vietnam Post, Ministry of Education and Training, and the Thieu Nien Tien Phong (Vanguard Teenagers) Newspaper.
