Strongest cold spell of the year hits northern Vietnam

The strongest cold spell since the beginning of this winter started to hit the northern provinces of Vietnam on January 22, bringing temperatures down to ten degrees Celsius in Hanoi.

According to the National Hydrology Meteorology Forecast Centre, the temperatures will continue to drop this weekend and early next week, reaching six degrees Celsius in Hanoi on January 25 and lower in mountainous areas.

Northern mountainous areas were also predicted to suffer from frost and snow with below zero degrees Celsius from January 23-26.

Since the evening of January 22, strong northeast monsoons and rough seas will occur in the Gulf of Tonkin and will continue to hit offshore waters in central and southern provinces including Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos.

The cold spell together with winds and rain is moving towards the central and southern regions with the lowest temperature in Ho Chi Minh City forecast at 17-18 degrees Celsius on January 24.
