Addressing the conference, Deputy PM Hue, who is also Head of the Steering Committee for the Southwest Region, acknowledged shortcomings and unbalanced development of the region’s traffic infrastructure, which have caused obstacles in bringing into full play the region’s potential.

He asked the Ministries of Transport, Planning and Investment, and Finance to closely work with the region’s localities to review and make proposals for the government on inter-regional projects on developing the regional transportation and logistics system in the 2016-2020 period, with the priority given to major national target programmes, and ODA projects.

He named major constructions which need further consideration, including the Dai Ngai bridge linking Tra Vinh and Soc Trang provinces, Rach Mieu bridge, Ca Mau-Nam Can national highway, and My Thuan 2 linking Tien Giang and Vinh Long provinces.

He requested the Ministry of Trade to co-ordinate with the Steering Committee for the Southwest region to design policies on removing difficulties for transport and logistics investors.

The Deputy PM ordered relevant ministries and sectors to work out plans for the instruction of a deep-water seaport on Hon Khoai island in Ngoc Hien district, 14.6km from Ca Mau and 42km from the province's Nam Can Economic Zone in order to open a gateway for goods export.

He also asked the aviation sector to expand the operational capacity of the Can Tho international airport.
