Speaking at the event, Politburo member and President of the VFF Nguyen Thien Nhan said that in recent days heavy rains had caused flooding on the Central Coast and in the Central Highlands, particularly causing serious damage to the five provinces of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam and Khanh Hoa.
The flooding has left 59 people dead or missing, 22 injured, 821 houses collapsed, 130,819 houses flooded and tens of thousands of hectares of crops inundated. Many schools, health centres and public buildings have been severely damaged. In particular, damage to people’s houses is estimated at VND2 trillion. Millions of people are in difficulty and need help.
The VFF leader conveyed his deep sympathy for local people in flood-stricken areas, adding that these days, the Party, the Government, the VFF and the local authorities are close to the people and actively direct and implement the provision of relief.
He shared that there are only 36 days left until the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) Festival, and that 5 million people of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam and Khanh Hoa will hardly have a roof under which to enjoy Tet, while more than a million students in these provinces have no classrooms.
Promoting the nation’s fine tradition of solidarity and “the good leaves protecting the worn-out leaves,” the VFF earnestly called on compatriots throughout the country, VFF member organisations, Vietnamese expatriates, international organisations and donors to take action and to make donations to those suffering due to the severe damage caused by the floods, Politburo member Nhan emphasised.
He also urged the VFF Central Committee and the Central Relief Committee to urgently organise donations and to provide relief to support reconstruction efforts.
At the launching ceremony, in response to the call from the VFF, relevant ministries, sectors and socio-political organisations donated more than VND8 billion and US$9,800 to support people in flooded areas in the central region.
