Tien Giang increases the prevention of foot and mouth disease in cattle at trading points

The Tien Giang People's Committee has issued the Document No. 4935 and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development issued the Document No.94 to require localities to strengthen the prevention of foot and mouth disease in cattle, especially focusing on vaccination of foot and mouth for cow herd in business points buying and selling concentrated, regularly importing cattle from other places to local.

According to the Tien Giang Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine, the whole province has 99 trading points selling cattle to farmers, of which, Cho Gao district has 33 points. Every day, these places buy from 5 to 10 cows bought from other localities to fatten and sell to local farmers. So, there is the high risk of the cow which has not yet been vaccinated and incubated of foot and mouth. As a result, the stations of animal husbandry and veterinary services in districts, towns and cities need closely to monitor the number of imported and exported daily cattle by these establishments, to vaccinate of foot and mouth disease, then wear ear tags for cattle to ease management of disease later.

Tien Giang province has about 115,000 cows with most of them concentrated in the eastern districts of the province. Up to this time, the province has vaccinated against foot and mouth for nearly 95,000 cows including 69,720 cows immunized, accounting for 79%, which is 14% higher than the protective disease rate according to regulation. Before the pressure of the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic is developing complicated in other provinces, the Tien Giang Veterinary Department notes that animal farmers need immediately to notify the veterinary agency if detecting cattle infected with foot and mouth disease; absolutely not to sold cattle infected, etc…
