Deputy PM inspects IUU fishing prevention measures in Ca Mau

ABO/NDO- Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang paid a working trip to the southern province of Ca Mau on June 26 to inspect its measures to prevent illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

According to Ca Mau officials, the province currently has over 4,100 fishing vessels; of which, vessel monitoring systems (VMS) having been installed on 1,515 vessels that are 15 metres long or longer.

At the meeting with Deputy PM Tran Luu Quang, Ca Mau officials highlighted a number of difficulties facing the province in fighting IUU fishing such as inadequate fishery infrastructure and weak sanctions against vessels disrupting VMS signals.

The province suggested that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development provide funding of 749 billion VND (31.8 million USD) for a fishery port on the southern bank of Song Doc River.

Working with Ca Mau leaders, Deputy PM Quang praised the province’s efforts in implementing measures to fight IUU fishing and took note of the difficulties facing the province.

He called for greater responsibility in performing the task of removing the European Commission’s yellow card.

During his working trip, Deputy PM Tran Luu Quang also visited the Song Doc Border Station as well as seafood companies and fishermen in Ca Mau Province.
