Blood donation event in Can Tho expects to collect more than 500 blood units

ABO/NDO- The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) and the Can Tho City’s Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation organised a ceremony on June 6 to kick off a blood donation event and honour outstanding blood donors in the city.

The event was held in response to the ‘Hanh trinh Do’ (Red Journey), which is the country’s largest-scale blood donation campaign. It is expected to collect more than 500 blood units, contributing to ensuring a blood source for emergency and treatment at hospitals in the south-western region.

Over the past five years, Can Tho city received 40,000 blood units every year. The blood donation rate is at 3.3% of the city’s population, one of the highest among all localities in the country.

According to Vu Duc Binh, deputy head of the Red Journey drive’s organising board, over its 10 editions, the drive has received the enthusiastic participation of 58 provinces and cities nationwide, receiving nearly 700,000 blood units and contributing to protecting people's health care.

At the ceremony, the organisers honoured 82 outstanding collectives, families and individuals in Can Tho city for their great contributions to blood donation in the city.

Prominent among them included the family of Dao Cong Khanh in Binh Thuy district, with three people in the family having donated their blood 71 times in total, and Vo Van Be from Ninh Kieu district, who has participated in blood donation 54 times.
