Programme launched to present two million helmets to first graders nationwide

ABO/NDO- A programme was launched in Hanoi on September 25 to present two million helmets to first graders nationwide for the 2023-2024 academic year and improve awareness of students and parents on traffic safety.

The event is jointly held by the National Committee on Traffic Safety, the Ministry of Transport, and Honda Vietnam.

At the ceremony, the parties signed a memorandum of understanding on delivering helmets that meet safety standards to 100% of first graders across the country and organising knowledge-sharing activities for parents, to improve protection skills when riding motorbikes.

Since it was first launched in 2018, the programme has presented six million helmets to first graders in Vietnam.

This year’s event is expected to benefit two million schoolchildren and 200,000 parents nationwide.

Speaking at the event, Khuat Viet Hung, Deputy Chairman of the National Committee on Traffic Safety, said that under the national strategy for ensuring road traffic order and safety during the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2045, Vietnam plans to reduce the number of fatalities caused by road traffic accident to zero by 2045.

However, he reported that traffic accidents claim the lives of around 700 children every year, and cause many others to suffer lifelong injuries or disabilities.

Therefore, he called on parents to set themselves as examples of observing traffic safety laws and regulations for their children to follow, including wearing helmets when riding motorbikes.
