NA leader welcomes UN Under-Secretary-General

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung asked for the UN’s further support to help Vietnam eliminate the AIDS pandemic by 2030 while receiving Michel Sidibé, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), in Hanoi on October 25.

The NA Chairman praised the UNAIDS’s efforts to build HIV/AIDS prevention strategies at global level and expressed his gratitude for its assistance to Vietnam’s fight against the disease.

As the Law on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Combat was put in place, an important legal foundation was created, helping ensure equal access to social welfare, as well as HIV/AIDS preventive services and treatment, he stated.

He went on to say that the country is utilising available resources to speed up its combat against HIV/AIDS and support people with HIV/AIDS.

Michel Sidibé applauded Vietnam for being the first announcing the implementation of the 90-90-90 target: 90% the proportion of people living with HIV knowing their diagnosis, 90% the proportion of people living with HIV receiving antiretroviral treatment, and 90% the proportion of people on HIV treatment having an undetectable viral load.

He expressed his belief that with the adopted Law on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Combat, Vietnam will see more successes in this fight.
