Vice President welcomes spouse of US Vice President

Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan hosted a reception for Jill Biden, the wife of US Vice President Joe Biden, in Hanoi on July 19.

Vice President Doan welcomed the visit by Jill Biden which takes place just after the official visit to the US by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of normolisation of Vietnam-US diplomatic ties.

She hailed the positive and practical progresses in the Vietnam-US ties, especially since the establishment of a comprehensive partnership in July 2013.

Vice President Doan appreciated the US’s enhanced co-operation in education, addressing war aftermaths, removing bombs and mines left from the war, detoxifying Agent Orange/Dioxin contaminated sites, and supporting people with disabilities.

She suggested Vietnam and the US should increase exchanges and collaboration in promoting the role of women and gender equality as well as people-to-people exchanges for the sake of the two peoples and the maintenance of peace, stability, security, co-operation and development in the region and beyond.

Jill Biden said the Vietnamese Party chief’s recent visit to the US created an opportunity to deepen the Vietnam-US relations over the coming time.

She thanked Vietnam for assisting the US in searching for US soldiers reported missing in action during wartime in Vietnam.

She also affirmed that she will work to support Vietnam in the fields of education, humanitarian aid, and addressing post-war consequences.

Highlighting the vital role of gender equality and education in each country’s development strategy, Jill Biden said she hopes the two sides will push ahead with cooperation in the specific fields.

Earlier, Jill Biden attended an event organised by the US Embassy in Hanoi to present helmets to Vietnamese children.
