Vietnam - US comprehensive partnership, result of joint efforts
Deputy Defence Minister, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh said the comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and the US established in 2013 was the result of a string of efforts from both sides since the normalisation of ties in 1995.
He noted that the first effort was to build mutual trust. Despite many differences, the two countries put these aside for the development of bilateral relations.
The Deputy Defence Minister pointed out the second effort was for the equality and respect of independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, political systems and the interests of each other.
In addition, there have gradually appeared similarities in the opinions on security between Vietnam and the US despite the differences during the wartime, Vinh stated.
The Senior Lieutenant General said on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the two countries' diplomatic ties, Vietnam has proved to the international community that Vietnam won the war against the US for national independence and Vietnam has made every effort to maintain peace and stability and to build good relationships with other countries, regardless of whether they were Vietnam's enemies in the past. Moreover, the relations between Vietnam and the US contribute to peace and stability in the region.
The US side is impressed by the stability of the Vietnamese defence, the all-people defence amid the complicated developments, wars and protests in the world during the past 20 years, Vinh said.
