Vietnam, Japan agree to increase political trust

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida have agreed to enhance political trust by keeping up regular visits and dialogues, in addition to upholding existing dialogue mechanisms.

During their talks in Hanoi on May 5, the two sides expressed delight at stronger and more comprehensive development of the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan.

They discussed measures to continue implementing outcomes of the official visit to Japan made by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong last September.

They also discussed making preparations for Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to attend the expanded G7 Summit in Japan scheduled for later this month, and to hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The two sides discussed regional and international issues of common concern and agreed to enhance cooperation at multilateral forums.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the two sides agreed on the need to ensure peace and security in adherence with international law.

Deputy PM and FM Minh affirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of regarding Japan as Vietnam’s leading and long-term partner.

Fumio Kishida said Japan attaches importance to and wishes to advance the strategic partnership with Vietnam and promises to support and coordinate with the country in UN peace-keeping operations as well as in bomb and mine clearance.
