Appreciating the attendance of President Waqa and the Nauru delegation at the GEF 6, President Quang congratulated Nauru on assuming the GEF Presidency and the position as President of the group of Pacific island countries.
Vietnam always keeps a close watch on the situation in Nauru and countries in South Pacific, the Vietnamese State leader said, expressing his wish that under the leadership of President Waqa, Nauru will continue to prosper.
Vietnam always attaches importance to promoting the friendship with Nauru, he affirmed.
Talking about measures to enhance the bilateral ties, President Quang stressed that Vietnam is willing to share experience with Nauru in the areas of the two countries’ potential like fisheries, agriculture, tourism and mining.
The leader welcomed Nauru delegations to Vietnam to exchange experience and promote cooperation, especially in the spheres that Vietnam is strong in such as rice cultivation, industrial tree planting, aquaculture and telecommunications.
The two countries’ leaders should utilise multilateral forums to hold meetings in order to reinforce mutual trust and understanding, President Quang suggested.
He also urged the two sides to reach cooperation agreements in such realms as economy, national security and defence, education, tourism and agriculture to create legal frameworks for bilateral collaboration.
The host proposed Nauru soon send a non-resident ambassador to Vietnam and pledged that Vietnam will consider dispatching a non-resident ambassador to the country.
He used this occasion to thank Nauru for urging the Asia-Pacific Group to approve the nomination of Vietnam as the group’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for 2020-2021.
Vietnam and Nauru should establish several cooperation frameworks and share each other’s stance on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including climate change, food security and natural disaster relief, President Quang said.
For his part, President Baron Divavesi Waqa highly valued Vietnam’s initiatives at the GEF 6, as well as socio-economic achievements the country has recorded over the past time.
Nauru prioritises cooperation with Vietnam in fisheries, food security and technical worker training, the President said.
He emphasised that Nauru will soon issue an official document affirming its support for Vietnam’s bid to run for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for 2020-2021.
