Tien Giang province exploits the potential of freshwater aquaculture

ABO - In 2018, Tien Giang put 5,830 hectares of inland water surface into freshwater aquaculture to meet the need of domestic consumption and processing for export. Many species and subjects is various according to the characteristics of each region, sub-region and terrain such as shrimp and fish farming in flooded paddy fields; breeding farming on alluvial grounds along Tien river; feeding frogs, eels, turtles integrated in VAC models, VACR, etc…

According to the Tien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, thanks to the network of rivers, canals and floodplain flooded areas upstream Tien river and Dong Thap Muoi region, Tien Giang province has many advantages in raising freshwater aquaculture all kinds with high economic value, thus both solving jobs for agricultural workers and helping to increase income.

The province attaches importance to bringing into play the potential of freshwater aquaculture as one of the important contents of the process of restructuring the production along the direction of diversifying plants and animals in line with the policy of restructuring local agriculture.

Tien Giang farmers boldly invest in important freshwater aquaculture areas such as fish-based aquaculture combined with rice up to hundreds of hectares of water surface in Cai Be flooded area, 1,195 fish cages in Tien river with a total capacity of nearly 135,000 m3 concentrated in My Tho city and Chau Thanh and Cai Lay districts; raising and nursing fingerlings in the field of Dong Thap Muoi region (of Tien Giang province), hundreds of hectares of water surface to be fed into catfish to serve the seafood processing industry for export, etc ...

Notably, in the farming area, there are 68 hectares of fish farming GAP certification, of which 6.4 hectares under GlobalGAP standards, 45,99 hectares under VietGAP standards, the remaining certified ASC certificate. In addition, there are 1 establishment with 20 cages in VietGAP category with the annual output of 200 tons of commercial fish. This is a good way to improve the quality of freshwater fisheries for domestic consumption and export now and in the future.

According to the assessment of the functional sector, recently, the freshwater fish-farming in Tien Giang province has prospered thanks to the technical progress, favorable output, high consumption market. These are the factors that have positive impact to help Tien Giang farmers continue to develop and exploit better potential freshwater aquaculture in the area.
