More effective measures needed to ensure traffic safety

Ministries, agencies and localities should work more closely together in order to reduce the number of traffic accidents, deaths and injuries, especially the number of serious traffic accidents.

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh made the request while presiding over a teleconference in Hanoi on March 16 held by the National Committee for Traffic Safety (NCTS) to review traffic safety and order in the first quarter of this year and roll out tasks for 2017.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy PM Binh, on behalf of the Prime Minister and the NCTS, sent his deep condolences to families of victims of a traffic accident which occurred in the morning of March 16 in Ha Nam province leaving three dead and many seriously injured.

The Deputy PM also asked Ha Nam and related agencies to quickly investigate and clarify the cause of this tragic accident.

The official called for greater efforts to ease traffic jams and prevent serious traffic accidents.

To meet the target, localities nationwide have been asked to closely monitor the operation of transport companies specialising in road and internal waterways, especially passenger services.

The committee reported that from December 16, 2016 to February 15, 2017, a total of 3,465 traffic accidents occurred nationwide, leaving 2,660 people injured and 1,570 dead, a drop of only 1.26% in the number of deaths.
