Decrease in traffic accidents in first nine months reported

Nearly 301 traffic accidents resulting in 199 deaths and 184 injuries were reported in Tien Giang province in the first half of this year.

The province saw a decrease in traffic accidents in the first nine months of the year but more serious accidents took place, reported the Tien Giang province Traffic Safety Committee at an online conference about traffic order in the government’s headquarter.

According to the Tien Giang province Traffic Safety Committee, in the first nine months of this year traffic policemen handles nearly 74,488 million traffic violations, seizing nearly VND29 billion; deprived more than 5,680 driver's licenses.

The numbers of accidents, deaths and injuries fell by 985 respectively compared to the same period last year.

However, there were as many as 179 serious traffic accidents that claimed a total of 179 deaths, 2 injuries and other asset losses.

According to the committee’s report, the traffic fatality rate fell in six distrists and towns  across the province.

Particularly, four districts and towns experienced reduced rates by up to 20%. They include Cai Be district, Tan Phuoc district, Go Cong town, Cai Lay town.

Five localities in the country reported a traffic fatality increase, including Cai Lay district, Chau Thanh district, My Tho city, Go Cong Dong district and Tan Phu Dong district.

Fatality rates in Cai Lay district was 64%, Tan Phu Dong dsitrict was 100%.

Chairing the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh, who is also head of the committee, said that despite efforts to curb traffic accidents and traffic jams, the public remains deeply concerned about the issues.

He also raised concerns about overloaded trucks, illegal bus passenger pick up/drop off methods and increased traffic jams. He called on more drastic measures to tackle the problems.
