Exhibition introducing traditional Japanese dolls to open in Da Nang

ABO/NDO- An exhibition introducing traditional Japanese dolls will be held in Da Nang City from May 30 to June 20, by the Japan Foundation Centre for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam.

The event aims to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Vietnam (1973 - 2023) while contributing to promoting the beauty of Japanese culture to the Vietnamese people.

The exhibition displays 32 dolls that simulate a variety of characters from children to adults, and 37 Kokeshi dolls, which are simple Japanese wooden dolls with no arms or legs, that were crafted at the end of the Edo period, in the Tohoku region of Japan.

The Kokeshi dolls were selected from a collection at the Tsugaru Kokeshi Doll Museum in Kuroishi City, Aomori Prefecture. Notably, there are five Kokeshi dolls made by Japanese artisans, with inspiration from Vietnamese culture.

Visitors to the exhibition can also try wearing Yukata (Japanese casual summer kimono), practising origami (the Japanese art of paper folding), and receiving paper dolls as gifts from the organisers.
