According to Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, the whole province has more than 42,600 pig farms with a total flock of 501,000 pigs this year, increased 30% over October 2016. Although the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has implemented a number of measures to support the pork consumption, prices of live pigs are only VND22,000-27,000 a kilogram, lower than the production cost from VND6,000-12,000 a kilogram.

At present, there are 52,000 pigs with weight over 120 kilogram per each. It is expected that 71,500 pigs will be sold in May 2017 and nearly 80,000 pigs in June 20117.

At the meeting, delegates discussed the difficult situation that pig raisers faced as well as unified to implement measures urgently to stimulate consumption and raise pig prices such as: to reduce pig flock, to apply the biosecurity processing raising, to reduce cost of livestock.

Many specialized agencies and management agencies should guide and orient pig breeeding suitably, to create conditions for slaughtering and processing establishments to maximize their capacity and strengthen inspection work for disease prevention, to strictly control the consumption market, to consider extending debt payment deadline and reduce interest rates on secured loans to help pig raisers tide over this crisis, etc...

In addition to immediate measures, in the long term, the relevant sector should reorganise the animal husbandry sector, reduce the size of pig supplies and restrict the establishment of new feed production facilities, support organizations and individuals to produce chain foodstuffs up to food safety and hygiene standards according to the roadmap for restructuring the livestock sector up to 2020.
